FREDDY KREUGER Released: 7th June, 2004

The second single taken from 'Racecar is Racecar Backwards', this was released after yet another long gap between records, in June 2004. It was the first single to have been recorded as part of the album, unlike Stuck In My Throat, which was later re-recorded. It was also the first release on XtraMile/Sony, whom the band had at last signed a proper record deal with. The single was released on CD and 7" vinyl format, and reached number 53 in the UK charts, knocking previous single SIMT off the band's 'biggest hit yet' spot. It also made the number one spot on the Chain With No Name independent chart, and Zane Lowe made it his Radio One single of the week. It was Reuben's first track to be playlisted on XFM, their first track to be played on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Rock Show, and it even got a few spins on Virgin radio!

The tracks:

Freddy Kreuger A song that was nearly two years old by the time it was released, Freddy Kreuger was already as well known to the live crowds as any of the band's singles, and they had even played as part of their first Radio One session.

Once An incredibly old song from the times even before original drummer Mark had joined the band, this had been a fixture of the band's acoustic sets. This version was recorded at the West End Centre by frequent tour manager and rock and roll legend, Angus 'filthy' Cowan.

Glitterskin Another old track, an early version of which can be found on the Peoplesound demo, this version was recorded at Reading college by Stephen Down and features a blistering Hammond organ solo which divided the fans more or less straight down the middle.

The facts:

The original lyrics to Freddy Kreuger’s middle eight section were ‘I got a face like a pizza’ instead of ‘I got a hand like a knife rack’, but the band’s wussy manager reckoned the imagery of a pizza-faced man was too horrible, so Jamie changed it.

Band chum Neil Lancaster played seven-string guitar on the choruses in Freddy Kreuger to give it a chunkier, less poppy sound. Jamie insists that he would have given the seven-string a go, but the only one the band could borrow was left handed, and the only left handed player they knew was Neil.

It was Neil's seven-string guitar.

The tracks Once and Glitterskin are the first tracks recorded by Reuben to feature mental instruments like, slide guitar and Hammond organ, neither of which Jamie had ever played before the sessions. 'I'd never played them before', he says.

Stephen Down, who recorded Glitterskin, went to school with Jon and Jamie.

The promotional video for the single was put on MTV2's A list, the band's highest listing yet. Featured in the video were director Dan Fernbach's dad, manager Barney's children Summer and Tabitha, Aldershot football club, staff and pupils at Collingwood College (Jon and Jamie's old school), Guy's brother Ashley, Jon's sister Emily, Angus and his girl Emma, both Jon and Jamie's lovely squeezes, staff at The Traditional Plaice chip shop where Jamie works, and Matt Bews, an engineer who worked on the album.

Left on the cutting room floor was the band’s manager, Barney 'bad news' Jeavons. The band had persuaded him to shave off his real moustache so he could wear a false one like the rest of the cast, but didn't use the clip with him in!

The house where the band are hanging out in the video is actually Guy's enormous mansion.

The title track, Freddy Kreuger, has been heard in Topshop, of all places. Topshop!
